We talk a lot about "psychological safety" in the corporate world these days. It’s become a bit of a buzzword, hasn’t it? We want teams to feel safe enough to speak up, safe enough to make mistakes, and safe enough to exist without fear of being mocked or fired.
And don't get me wrong, safety is huge. It’s the floor. It’s the absolute bare minimum for a healthy workplace. But here’s the thing: for many of us, especially LGBTQ+ leaders and executives, "safety" often feels like a glass ceiling. We feel safe enough to survive, but we don’t always feel safe enough to be radically authentic.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re wearing an "executive mask" the moment you log onto Zoom or walk into the boardroom, this is for you. It’s time to move past the idea of just being safe and start building an environment where we can actually be ourselves.
Why Safety is Just the Beginning
Think of psychological safety as the foundation of a house. You need it so the walls don’t fall down. It’s the environment where you know that if you share a differing opinion or admit a mistake, you won’t be punished.
But you don’t live in the foundation. You live in the house.
For many LGBTQ+ professionals, "safety" has historically meant "I won't be discriminated against." While that’s vital, it still leaves a lot of room for the invisible labor of being an LGBTQ executive. You might feel safe from being fired, but do you feel free to bring your full self to the table? Or are you still spending 20% of your energy monitoring your tone, your pronouns, and your personal stories to make sure they fit "traditional" norms?
Radical authenticity is what happens when we stop just trying to be "safe" and start being "real."

What Radical Authenticity Actually Looks Like
Let’s clear something up: radical authenticity isn't about oversharing or having zero filters. It’s not about telling everyone every detail of your weekend if you don’t want to.
It’s about alignment.
It’s when your internal values and your outward behavior match up. It’s when you can speak your truth: even if it’s uncomfortable: because you trust that your value isn’t tied to how well you can mimic a "traditional" leader.
Radical authenticity looks like:
Being honest when you’re overwhelmed instead of performing "perfection."
Sharing a personal perspective that challenges the status quo.
Ditching the corporate jargon for language that actually sounds like you.
Showing up as your queer, trans, or non-binary self without feeling the need to "tone it down" for the comfort of others.
It’s about moving from a place of "I’m allowed to be here" to "I belong here exactly as I am."
The "Executive Mask" and Traditional Norms
For decades, the "ideal leader" was defined by a very narrow set of traits: stoic, authoritative, and often, cis-gendered and heteronormative. If you didn’t fit that mold, you learned to build a mask. You learned to code-switch. You learned to be "professional" in a way that erased the most vibrant parts of your identity.
But here is the truth: that mask is heavy. It’s exhausting. And honestly? It’s holding you back from being the leader your team actually needs.
When you lead from a place of radical authenticity, you give everyone else permission to do the same. You break the cycle of "polite" silence. You move past the traditional norms that were never designed for us anyway, and you start creating new ones.

How to Foster an Environment of Radical Authenticity
If you’re a leader, you have the power to move your team past safety and toward authenticity. But you can't just demand it. You have to build the container for it.
Here’s how you can start:
1. Model the "Mess"
If you only show up as the polished, "perfect" CEO, your team will think they have to be perfect too. Share your challenges. Admit when a project is stressing you out. When you show your own humanity, you make it safe for others to show theirs.
2. Challenge "Professionalism"
Ask yourself: Is this behavior actually unprofessional, or does it just break a traditional (and often biased) norm? If someone’s personal expression, hair, clothing, or communication style doesn't affect their work quality, why are we judging it? Encourage self-expression as a core value.
3. Welcome Healthy Conflict
A "safe" workplace where everyone just nods and agrees isn't actually healthy: it’s stagnant. Authentic workplaces have friction. They have differing opinions. Learn to facilitate strategic pausing during heated moments so that conflict leads to growth, not resentment.
4. Protect Energy, Not Just Time
Recognize that being authentic takes energy, especially for those in marginalized groups. Support your team in setting boundaries. Remind them that they aren't machines. Acknowledging the emotional energy required to work in a world that isn't always kind is a huge step toward radical authenticity.
Starting Small: The 10-Minute Shift
You don’t have to change your entire corporate culture overnight. Radical change often starts with tiny, daily choices.
Think about one thing you usually "mask" at work. Maybe it's an interest, a part of your identity, or just a way of speaking. What would happen if you let that mask slip just a little bit today?
You might feel a pang of discomfort. That’s okay. Expect discomfort, not guilt. It’s normal to feel uneasy when you’re breaking patterns that kept you "safe" for years. But on the other side of that discomfort is a level of freedom you’ve probably been craving.

The Ripple Effect
When you choose radical authenticity, the ripple effect is massive. You aren't just helping yourself; you're literally changing the blueprint for what leadership looks like.
You’re showing the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders that they don’t have to hide to succeed. You’re showing your peers that empathy and vulnerability are strengths, not weaknesses. And you’re showing your company that the most valuable asset they have isn't your ability to conform: it’s your unique, unfiltered perspective.
Check in with yourself daily. Are you leaning into your truth, or are you shrinking to fit a room? Are you building safety, or are you building a sanctuary for authenticity?
You Don't Have to Do This Alone
